No matter how good a product is, there are always concerns and with the amino acid L-tyrosine one of the main concerns is whether or not the supplement can worsen headaches and migraines. Some people who are struggling with migraines find that they cannot take certain products without making it worse. This requires a lot of trouble shooting, but one of the issues that some people have had is that L-tyrosine makes it worse or more common to have migraine headaches.
Because L-tyrosine is usually metabolized in to L-DOPA in the brain, there are benefits for dopamine in the brain. At the same time, there is another pathway that leads to a build-up of trace “amines”. These are not important to remember, but it is a byproduct of going from L-tyrosine to L-DOPA. These byproducts are often the cause of migraines because they build up in the brain and cause an issue. Some of the research that has come out recently about migraine headaches shows that they have elevated levels of tyrosine (including dopamine and adrenaline).
If this is true then L-tyrosine might not be the best supplement for people who struggle from chronic migraines. However, this is not to say that you cannot use it if you have ever had a headache – far from it. Instead, what it means is that you need to be conscious and aware when you are taking any kind of supplement. You are going to have a lot of benefits when using L-tyrosine if you do so responsibly and, like anything else, there are a few things to do to make sure that it fits for your brain chemistry.
Everyone is unique and just because you are using a supplement to improve your brain health doesn’t mean you can’t take precautions and know what the risks are.
